This week... [09 Jul 2006|02:58pm]
has been busy. On Monday, it was welcome day. We toured the campus and had a tour of Brussels on a bus. At night, we had a cocktail party where we met all the other students in our program. I think there are 28 MSU students in all. There was wine, champagne, orange juice, sparkling water, variety of little sandwiches and crackers with different spreads. It was good. I got to meet a lot of people. After the party, a lot of us went out to the bar..but I didn’t drink. Most of my roommates here are all about drinking and getting drunk. They have been drinking just about every night. It’s not like I didn’t expect it….I mean, we’re in Europe!
Tuesday was the field trip to NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). It was an ok trip...kinda boring. It's funny how they have a salon in there. We didn't get to see anything cool there cause we weren't allowed. We had two briefings. I got a free NATO DVD fictional movie...haven't watched it yet, a free NATO map game and some postcards. There was free lunch there so that was nice. I had a ham and cheese sandwich and a Coke. We had our first class with Schecter. He went through the Cold War events of NATO pretty quickly. I still have to finish reading the book because we have an essay due next Wednesday.
Wednesday we went to SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Power Europe..part of NATO). This was more interesting. We had a power point presentation followed by Q&A and lunch. I was surprised how they didn’t search our bags and passport, but then again, they all have guns. Lunch was awesome; it was a full course meal. We had classes afterwards. Very long day. The drive to SHAPE was about an hour.
Thursday, we went to EU (European Union). We were supposed to meet there at 10:30 but our group was late. The directions said that it was an ugly red building so that was what we were searching for. The building was neither red nor ugly… The lady in the EU said that normally they didn’t allow people to come in late but she let us in. There were about 10 of us who were late.
We don’t have classes on Friday. I and 3 other people went to The Atomium. It was neat going into it. It was a little expensive though…6 euros. We didn’t end up going to Mini Europe because others didn’t want to go and the fact that is costs 12 euros. Then we went around Grand Place and walked around. We saw Mannekin Pis which I was disappointed. I was expecting it to be a lot bigger. I had some Belgian waffle and Belgian chocolate which was really good. Then at night, we had a fabulous full course dinner that cost 12 euros. I had mussels for my appetizer, salmon & sea bass & fries for dinner and then this cake for dessert. It also came with a free drink so I got Kriek which is a cherry flavored beer (I was thinking about getting Coke, but didn’t really feel like it).
Saturday I went to Brugge which is a city northwest of Brussels, about an hour away. It was a very tourist city that reminded me of Mackinaw Island. It was very pretty. We did a canal tour and visited some churches. There wasn’t really much to do there. I will have pictures up on facebook.
Today, I will be mainly reading. I need to finish atleast one of the books and do some research for my paper due Wednesday. Tonight is the finals for soccer and a lot of the people in my house are going to the bar to watch the game. I don’t know if I will go though because I don’t like drinking but at the same time, I feel like I should go.

I found internet connection yesterday in my room by moving my laptop on the window sill's ledge. No .80 euros per half hour for me.

I´m in Belgium! [28 Jun 2006|01:11pm]
It´s really hard to type since some of the letters are rearranged. I didn´t have trouble finding the place...I just asked around. It´s really hot here. My room that I picked is big with a sink but it was leaking water. I will upload some pics later cause it is extremely hard to type. I´ll stop now.
